I was deleting Old Links when I stumbled upon my old Cancer Blog.
Wow, it wasn't just a reminder of what I went through but also a testament to how time passes so quickly.
The first post I saw was about my friend Glen Brake's death after a training run for the CAT 50K. How damn ironic as I recently pulled out of the race (25K old man's race) due to re-occurring injuries. I will still be there as cheerleader and aid station Caption at the Delauter Road Aid Station. Hopefully my son Kevin will take the baton and finish the race; it's one brutal SOB.
Well about me since it is my blog; I'm seventy-one years old and realize life as I enjoy it is limited. I am hoping I can remain physical for another ten years, but time will tell. I can still run a 7xx minute mile (slightly downhill) and the very first race I ran at 70+ age I won the 60+ age group (a 5 k)
The most surprising aspect of my life has to do with golf; who would figure? I have been playing with a putting skill I never had as a younger man. In some ways it's great yet in another it really sucks. I remember coming off an eighteenth green with a stranger telling me, "You are the best ball striker I've ever played with and the worst putter I have ever seen". I probably hit 15-16 greens in regulation, shot in the seventies, but with 38-40 putts. It happened a lot "back in the day"
My running has been very frustrating for months now. It started out with a hamstring, then I banged up a hip (twice in three weeks), figuring I overcame that injury I tried to go fast (a relative word these days) only to pull something in my groin.
Message to all my older friends; you don't heal as quickly as you use too.
Long and short, I'm still here, life has it's struggles but my family and friends fill any voids I feel as I age.
Mike
